Are your Goals working towards your Dreams?

I wonder how often we pose this question to ourselves. To clarify, the dreams I'm referring to are those aspirations we had perhaps as children, or those that represent our ultimate definition of success. Meanwhile, goals are more immediate accomplishments, like securing a job after graduation or passing a significant exam. While our goals may shift and adapt over time based on our surroundings and circumstances, our dreams tend to remain constant, perhaps even expanding in scope.

Based on my own experiences, I've noticed that we often become so caught up in meeting the demands placed upon us that we might lose sight of our dreams or become too tired to pursue them further. I frequently ponder whether my 12-year-old self would be pleased with who I am today. I genuinely believe it's crucial to ask ourselves this question, even if it brings a moment of sadness because it allows us to pause and view our lives through a different lens. This reflection gives us the opportunity to analyse our choices and decisions, provides direction for our future, and helps us remain fully present in the moment. This question serves as a guiding star for us.

As adults, it's easy to get caught up in the rat race, focusing so much on what we need to do next that we forget about what we once hoped to become. The daily grind often overshadows our childhood aspirations, and before we know it, the dreams that once fueled our passion and excitement become distant memories.

Yet, it's important to remember that these dreams are more than just fleeting thoughts; they are profound indicators of our true desires and potentials. They can offer us guidance and inspiration, especially when we feel lost or unsatisfied with our current trajectories. Reconnecting with these dreams isn't just about recapturing lost youth; it's about integrating our deepest ambitions into our adult lives, ensuring that our personal and professional endeavors are aligned with our core values.

Taking the time to reconnect with our dreams requires intentional effort. It might mean carving out time in our busy schedules to simply daydream, reflect, or engage in activities that reignite our childhood passions. This could be anything from writing poetry, playing a musical instrument, or even planning an adventure that we always wanted to take.

Moreover, it's beneficial to create environments that encourage reflection and inspiration. Surrounding ourselves with supportive people who understand and share our aspirations can make a significant difference. These might be friends, family members, or even colleagues who encourage us to think big and challenge ourselves. They can remind us of our potential and help us stay focused on broader, more meaningful goals.

Additionally, setting tangible, small goals that are steps towards achieving our larger dreams can help bridge the gap between our daily tasks and our long-term aspirations. This strategy not only makes our dreams more attainable but also integrates them into our regular lives, making each day a step towards fulfilling those deeper ambitions.

Ultimately, asking ourselves whether we are true to the dreams of our younger selves is not just about accountability; it’s about ensuring that our lives are as rich and fulfilling as possible. It’s about not settling for what’s easy or immediately accessible but striving for what truly matters to us. By frequently evaluating our paths and adjusting our courses, we can live with purpose and enthusiasm, honouring both who we were and who we aspire to become.

Let me know your thoughts while I am still figuring out mine :)
