If you are someone who's looking to or contemplating the decision to move to the USA for whatever reasons, then this article might resonate or be of help to you. I've spent nearly two years researching this topic and am excited to share my findings with everyone. While I don't have all the answers and might even welcome suggestions from you, I understand there's a lot of information out there, which can be overwhelming. There's an ongoing discussion about the differences in lifestyle and pay between the USA and India, with many concluding that staying in India might be the better option. I've analyzed both sides of the decision, reviewed information available online, and spoken to various people on the matter to reach a conclusion that works for me. My aim is to present all this information in a straightforward manner, starting with the more logical or quantitative aspects before moving on to subjective thoughts.
Migration
There are many reasons one might consider moving, but a visa is essential. While there are many different types of visas, I have focused on the most common options. The simplest and most traditional route is to pursue education in the USA and then seek employment.
Listing down the most conventional visas:
You pursue education in the USA (F - 1 visa)
Your company (in India) transfers you to their branches in the USA (L - 1 visa) [authorised to work]
You are dependent on someone working in the USA (H - 4 visa) [authorised to work only if you receive an EAD (Employment Authorisation Document)]
You are dependent on someone studying in USA (F - 2 visa) [not authorised to work in USA]
You get a job in the USA (from India) (H1 - B visa) [authorised to work]
Purchasing Power Parity
Once you've successfully secured a job in the USA, it's important to consider the actual salary differences using the concept of purchasing power parity, which compares the actual value of your currency against others.
For example, a salary of $100,000 per year (i.e. ~ ₹83,33,000 in Indian rupees as per direct conversion) in the USA is approximately equivalent to ₹25,00,000 per year in India. (These figures can vary based on several factors.)
Lifestyle
Conclusion
If you are earning a seven-figure salary in India, life can be quite comfortable and convenient. With a good income, you can afford a higher standard of living, including access to better housing, education, and healthcare. The cost of living in India can be relatively low compared to Western countries, allowing you to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. Additionally, being close to your family and experiencing a strong sense of community are significant benefits that contribute to your overall well-being and happiness. The support system provided by family and friends in India can be invaluable, and cultural familiarity can offer a sense of security and comfort.
However, from another perspective, the convenience of cheap labour and readily available junk food in India can lead to lifestyle choices that may not be the healthiest. With affordable domestic help, it can be easy to become dependent on others for tasks you could do yourself, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. Similarly, easy access to inexpensive, unhealthy food options can tempt you into poor eating habits. These factors, combined with the challenges posed by poor air quality in many urban areas, can have a negative impact on your health. The high levels of air pollution in some Indian cities can contribute to respiratory problems and other health issues, making it harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Considering these factors, I have decided to move to the USA. The decision was not easy, but it was influenced by a desire for a healthier environment, new professional opportunities, and a different lifestyle. The USA offers a diverse and multicultural environment, which can provide a broader perspective and new experiences. Additionally, the work culture and opportunities for career growth in the USA can be appealing, especially in industries such as technology, finance, and healthcare. While the cost of living may be higher, the potential for a better quality of life and access to advanced healthcare and education systems are significant considerations.
Each one of us has different goals and perspectives in life. What works best for one person may not be suitable for another. It's important to carefully consider all the factors, including personal, professional, and lifestyle preferences, before making such a significant decision. Moving to a new country involves not only logistical challenges but also emotional and cultural adjustments. It's essential to weigh the pros and cons, seek advice from others who have made similar moves, and be prepared for the changes that come with living in a different country.
Ultimately, the decision to move should be based on what aligns with your long-term goals and values. Whether you choose to stay in India or move to the USA, it's crucial to make an informed decision that takes into account your personal circumstances, career aspirations, and overall well-being.
